She was on the floor more than on her feet. But we got her wheels tightened up a bit so they were so rolly and off she went. The skating rink is her new favorite place to go now.

Hubby has been having bit of Nostalgia and wanted to take Cameron to the local skating rink. When we started on the skates I didn't know what was going to become of this experience.
She was on the floor more than on her feet. But we got her wheels tightened up a bit so they were so rolly and off she went. The skating rink is her new favorite place to go now.
Here she is getting her skate on with Daddy in the background.

We started Fall softball and let me first say that I understand this is the off season and we learned really quick last year that Fall Ball is very laid back. It's just sort of a practice time in between the Spring seasons. However, for $65 I still expect there to be some organization.
Last year they decided they were not going to turn the lights on for the Fall Ball, which means games need to start early in order to be done by the time it got dark. It's pretty hard to get a team together at 5:00 for a game when most parents are just getting off work at that time. And games are not scheduled on Saturday in the Fall because you know we live Alabama and they eat, sleep and breath College football down here. So no way can you schedule games and practice on Saturday when you have Alabama/Auburn football. That would just be wrong. So because of the time and all, you don't get a big group of kids signing up for the Fall.

There were 2 teams in Cameron's Darling division that practiced together with the same 2 couches and on game day we had some purple girls on the orange team or vice versa depending on which team had the fewest players. We were lucky if 6 on each team showed up. Yeah, a little hard to play a game with 6 on a team. So it started off rocky and wet - lots of rain in the first few weeks so they had limited practice time and rained out games are not rescheduled in the Fall.
Ontop of all that, the 2 coaches were women. We were lucky and got the young girl right out of college who grew up playing many years of softball. I say lucky, because the other coach was a mom of a girl who played in the Sweetie division in the Spring which is T-ball. Nothing against it, my daughter had been there done that too. However T-ball play and Softball play at this ballpark are soooooo different. Coaching 4,5 and younger 6 is nothing at all like couching 7, 8 and 9. Our coach understood that, the other didn't.
The 2 could not decide on times for practice. Our coach was available anytime - the other had certain days. I don't know why they had to practice together. Take your team and practice when you can. Our coach wanted the girls to make the plays, the other wanted the hit ball to go directly to the pitcher which would stop the play. It goes on and on. Cameron had fun, and she got a lot of home runs since she knocks it out to the outfield and there isn't anyone right there to get it due to everyone being in the infield because of the low numbers.
I just which for the money we pay that the girls got more practice in.

We are 2 weeks away from the first day of school! Where did the summer go? I can't believe my baby is going to be a second grader. At least for the first 3 weeks of school I can keep reminding myself that she is only 6. But then 7 will come and I wont be able to fool myself anymore. I guess that's life though.
We did our school shopping this morning. I managed to get everything on the supply list except a box of ziploc baggies. I just hope the teacher's personal supply list is not a big one. It was odd for there to be no pencils or folders listed. We will find out on back to school night in a couple weeks.
I think she is set for uniform clothes. I bought 2 jumpers, 2 skirts and 2 shirts and a pair of Mary Jane shoes. We have a couple left over shorts for summer from last year and I will need to buy a school shirt for Friday's and a grade level shirt for Tuesday's. They have added the color red to their uniforms so I would like to pick up at least 1 red shirt. The store we went to didn't have the red in her size so we will have to check another store. I am going to buy a heavy zip up cardigan online because they are clearanced at $5.00 with 1.00 shipping. We won't need that for a few months though.
Now to find some bigger bags to pack all the supplies in to take on back to school night.

Cameron attended vacation bible school for the first time this past week based on a recommendation by my friend Michelle. Her son has has gone in the past and said he really enjoyed it. Cameron loved it. She couldn't stop talking about all the things she had done that first day when I picked her. Today was the last day and all the children put on a little musical. Older children acted out a little play and in between scenes the younger child sang songs. When we left she said she wished VBS was everyday. I am glad she enjoyed it and she will be looking forward to attending next summer. I couldn't get a good picture of her on stage doing her singing, but I got this grainy one of her coming on to the stage.

When I picked Cameron up from summer camp today she was so excited to tell me something that she could hardly get the words out fast enough. She was now a guppy which meant she could play on the big water slides.
She takes an hour of swimming lessons everyday at camp and then gets to play for an hour in the water park. She started out as a polliwog and that meant she had to wear a red wrist band in the water park and could only go on the little water slides that come out in shallow water. Now that she has moved up to a Guppy she gets to wear a green band and use the big slides that come out in the deep end. She has been wanting to go on the big slides since the first day and knew what she had to accomplish in swim class to be able to do that. I am very excited for her! I am sure that is all I am going to hear about this weekend, is her not being able to wait for Monday so she can get back on the big slides.

There has been so much going on lately that the past 3 weeks have just flown by. Cameron started school 3 weeks ago and she hasn't had a bit of trouble adjusting to first grade. I am just amazed at the difference between the start of last school year and the start of this school year. If there could be something as different as night and day, this would be it. It's been wonderful! She loves her teacher and I really like her too. We have been very lucky so far with wonderful teachers. I hope it continues through the years to come.
First grade is definitely different from kindergarten. She had one homework assignment a week last year aside from reading. This year, not only does she have homework every night, but she has 2 or 3 assignments each night (math, writing, reading unit). In addition to that she has to practice sight words, math problems and spelling words each night. She has a test on each of these 3 subjects every Friday. She is required to do 25 math problems in 2 minutes and has and 8 word spelling test plus one sentence she has to write. And then she is tested on 12 different sight words. Oh and we can't forget the 2 Accelerated Reader books she has to read and test on each week. This is first grade! I swear I didn't have homework like that until 5th or 6th grade. Have I just blocked it out??
So far she is handling it very well. It doesn't seem to be over whelming to her, I guess because she is not struggling with any of the work at this point. And I am pleased to know she is in the top reading group in her class. With the read well program they use it is broken into units 1 - 36 and she is expected to reach unit 36 by the end of the year. Because of her reading group level, she has started with unit 27 so she is expected to finish the first grade read well program by the end of the first 9 week marking period. I am not sure where they will go from there, but they will have to do something because the reading units are 50% of their grade each marking period.
She is also on a 10 point grading scale this year. No more S (satisfactory) N (needs work) etc.. from the kindergarten days. So her report cards will be much more exciting to look at this year.
In sports news, she is still plugging away at gymnastics two hours a week. We have started fall softball this week and before the practice even started I knew we were in a whole new ball game (pun intended). We came from little kiddie boy/girl t-ball where Cam was one of the oldest and the majority of the kids just ran all over the field with out a clue. This time it is girls softball and Cam is the youngest on the team. It is 6, 7 & 8 year olds and by the looks of it I would say they are mostly 8 year olds with a few 7's and one (maybe 2) 6 year olds. And these girls ARE.SERIOUS.
They showed up with cleats on their feet and bat bags over their shoulder, complete with tight ponytails and chewing bubble gum. The first practice was an hour and half and included an assistant couch spending one on one time with the girls as a batting coach. SERIOUS. She did great though and doesn't seem to be the least bit intimidated by the bigger, (and more obviously) experienced girls. I think she will learn a lot this season and it will probably be a deciding factor in whether or not this is the kind of sport she wants to continue in.
The practice has worked with her gymnastic schedule, but I think the game nights are going to interfere. So I think we are going to put a hold on the gymnastics classes until after fall ball. With her school work, I think 1 activity at a time will be better anyway.
And of course her birthday is coming up next week. I can't believe my baby will be six.
Where is the time going?? She will be having a bowling party next Saturday and is really excited. We have always had her birthday parties in Michigan with family so this is her first all kid birthday party since she was 2. I made invitations last week to send out that you can see on my craft blog. I have to get busy this week and get some treats made for school and for the party.
